RESUMO do CURRICULUM VITAE

 O Doutor Helder Coelho é Professor Catedrático da Universidade de Lisboa no Departamento de Informática da Faculdade de Ciências (FCUL), desde Agosto de 1995, e Membro Efectivo da Academia de Engenharia desde Dezembro de 1999. ECCAI fellow desde 2002.

 Licenciou-se em Engenharia Electrotécnica pelo Instituto Superior Técnico da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (UTL) em 1968, e obteve os graus de Especialista em Informática do Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC) em 1980, de Ph. D. em Inteligência Artificial pela Universidade de Edimburgo em 1980, de Doutor em Engenharia Informática (Inteligência Artificial) pele Universidade Nova de Lisboa em 1981, por equiparação, e de Agregado em Matemática pela UTL em 1988.

 Começou a sua carreira de investigação no Laboratório de Física e Energia Nuclear (hoje INETI) em 1968, tendo-se transferido em 1973 para o LNEC, onde permaneceu dezasseis anos, alcançando a categoria de Investigador Principal em 1984. Ajudou a criar o Centro de Informática do LNEC em 1974, onde co-fundou o primeiro Grupo da Inteligência Artificial portuguesa em 1973 (GIA). Participou no projecto de Lógica Computacional até 1978, passando depois a liderá-lo. Foi professor auxiliar convidado no DEIOC da FCUL de 1981 a 1983, onde leccionou Inteligência Artificial e participou no projecto INFOLOG. De 1984 a 1990 foi responsável pelo Núcleo de Sistemas de Informação do Centro de Informática do LNEC e coordenador dos projectos de investigação do PIDDAC no LNEC, "Tecnologias da Informação para os Sistemas Administrativos" (TISA) e “Edifícios Inteligentes”, e no projecto JNICT "Sistemas Avançados para Edifícios Inteligentes" (este com a colaboração do INESC), tendo sido o principal organizador do 1º Encontro Nacional de Tecnologias da Informação, realizado em Lisboa e em 1986. Participou também no projecto SPRINT RA41 "Expert Systems for Building Services". Re-iniciou o serviço docente no Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) em 1985, como professor associado convidado, sendo responsável pelas cadeiras de Informática das Licenciaturas de Economia e Gestão, e de Inteligência Artificial e Sistemas de Informação e de Conhecimento do Mestrado de Matemática Aplicada à Economia e à Gestão (MAEG), tendo também sido co-fundador do Departamento de Matemática do ISEG em 1986. Após obter a Agregação em 1988 transferiu-se para o ISEG a tempo inteiro onde como Catedrático da UTL passou a reger a partir de 1990 a cadeira de Fundamentos de Inteligência Artificial na Licenciatura de MAEG. Foi o criador e dinamizador do Núcleo de Tecnologias e Ciências da Informação do ISEG a partir de Fevereiro de 1994 e até Junho de 1995. Em Novembro de 1995 foi eleito Presidente da Comissão Executiva do Departamento de Informática da FCUL, cargo que exerceu até Setembro de 1997. Passou então a dirigir o Centro de Ciências da Complexidade (C3) da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa. Desde Janeiro de 1998 que é o Coordenador Científico do LABMAC (Laboratório de Modelos e Arquitecturas Computacionais) do C3, unidade reconhecida e apoiada financeiramente pela FCT.

 Ingressou no INESC em Janeiro de 1990 como Chefe de Projecto para liderar a constituição de uma equipa de Inteligência Artificial, envolvendo-se logo no projecto  NORMLOG, apoiado pela Fundação Luso-Americana, no projecto JNICT  Diálogos Multi-Agentes, e no projecto industrial SIGEPI do PITIE. Participou activamente nos projectos JNICT DEONTLOG e JURAD (do STRIDE), ao longo da fieira de automatização de sistemas administrativos, iniciada com o projecto TISA ainda no LNEC, e até Outubro de 1995. É um dos especialistas em Inteligência Artificial/Sistemas Periciais do consórcio ERCIM, tendo ocupado cargo idêntico no programa EUROPACE. É coordenador de um dos núcleos de excelência da rede europeia Compulog, e foi revisor científico ("reviewer") da DGXIII da CEE para três projectos ESPRIT e representante nacional nos projectos EUROTRA e DOSES da DGXII. Foi consultor do projecto PITIE SQLIT, coordenado pelo Centro de Ferramentas do INESC. Participou no projecto ESPRIT III MODELAGE, no projecto Estímulo Classificação de Imagens de Satélite, nos projectos Praxis INTERAGE. MAGO e SARA, e em projectos de cooperação internacional com os grupos de IA da Universidade de Birmingham (Reino Unido), do Instituto de Psicologia do CNR de Roma (Itália), da Universidade Nacional de Ensino à Distancia de Madrid, do Instituto Leibniz do IMAG/CNRS (França), da Escola Politécnica da Universidade Estadual de São Paulo (Brasil) e da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (Brasil). Actualmente, faz parte do projecto europeu COSI (Complexity in Social Science, Modelling & Designing Complex Organisational Systems), e é consultor científico do projecto europeu NORMEC (Normative Dimensions of Action and Order), liderado pelo ISCTE, e do Núcleo de Estudos de Complexidade em Economia do ISEG (UTL).

 Foi um dos proponentes da criação do Centro de Ciências da Complexidade (C3) da Universidade de Lisboa, em Julho de 1995, uma iniciativa conjunta de professores das Faculdades de Ciências, de Letras e de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa, o qual visa promover o espírito interdisciplinar perante as situações complexas do mundo de hoje. É coordenador científico do Laboratório de Modelos e Arquitecturas Computacionais (LABMAC) do C3.

 É autor e co-autor de mais de 25 livros, os últimos dos quais “Prolog by Example” na Springer-Verlag em 1988, "Inteligência Artificial" na Editorial Caminho em 1991, "Simulating Societies" na The University of Cambridge Library Press em 1994, "A Inteligência Artificial em 25 Lições" na Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, na sua série de manuais universitários, Sonho e Razão, Ao Lado do Artificial" na Relógio d Água  (2ª edição) em 1999, e mais de 400 artigos.
