I'm an Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisboa. I received my PhD degree in Computer Science (Informatics) from the University of Lisboa in 2003. I'm also a member of the LaSIGE (Large-Scale Informatic Systems Laboratory) research unit and of the Navigators group, where I co-lead the Timeliness and Adaptation in Dependable Systems research line.
My main research interests are in the area of dependable adaptive systems, focusing on architectures and middleware solutions for distributed embedded real-time applications. I'm currently coordinating the FP7 KARYON project, and the CMU-Portugal TRONE project. In the past I've been involved in other national and international projects, like the HIDENETS (FP6) and the CORTEX (FP5) projects.
In the last few years I've been teaching several courses of the Informatics Engineering Degree, including Real-Time and Embedded systems, Programming in Distributed Systems, Parallel Computing and Computer Architectures. Currently I'm teaching courses of the MSc in Information Technology - Information Security (MSIT-IS), a Masters program of the partnership with the Carnegie Mellon University.
I'm currently the coordinator of the Masters in Information Security (MSI - Mestrado em Segurança Informática) of the DI-FCUL. From 2004 to 2006 I was responsible for the computing infrastructure of the Faculty, serving more than 5000 students and staff, and I had the same kind of responsibility at department level, from 2005 to 2011, managing an infrastructure with more than 10 labs serving more than 1000 students and professors.
Like most people, I have some hobbies. In particular I used to enjoy playing Magic (now I'm retired ;-)) and I really like geocaching, which I do whenever I have the opportunity and the time for it. If you have a GPS device, you should also give it a try!
