LASIGE - Large-Scale Informatics Systems Laboratory is a research unit of the Informatics Department (DI) of the University of Lisboa, Faculty of Sciences (FCUL). The Laboratory spreads its activity through several sub-areas of Informatics (Computer Science and Engineering) including Distributed Systems, Human Computer Interaction and Multimedia, Information Management, Security and Dependability. LaSIGE follows a research-line centred strategy, currently covering the following lines that embody the unit's mid/long-term research objectives:

- Biomedical Informatics;
- Communication System Software and Middleware;
- Fault and Intrusion Tolerance in Open Distributed Systems;
- Global Computing
- Human Computer Interaction and Multimedia;
- Information Management;
- Timeliness and Adaptation in Dependable Systems.

LASIGE research activities are funded by FCUL, by FCT (through the multiannual funding programme and national research projects), and by international projects (mainly, E.U. projects). LASIGE has approximately 90 collaborators, 27 of which hold a doctoral degree, 21 are researchers in the middle of their Ph.D. programmes and 30 are MS.C students or junior researchers. The current Director is Prof. Paulo Veríssimo.

LabMAg - Laboratório de Modelação de Agentes

The Laboratory of Agent Modelling (LabMAg) is a R&D unit dedicated to computational models of agents. LabMAg is hosted at Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) and integrates researchers from FCUL, Universidade de Évora, ISCTE and IST/UTL. LabMAg is one of the founder institutions of the Institute for Complexity Sciences (ICC).

The research directions of this unit cover the increasing role of physical, biophysical and social models of agents, within the Computing Sciences. Three main ideas are explored, namely the fact that a) these models have computational power, b) these models have structure/form that can be replicated by computation, and c) these models may be used as metaphors in real problem solving.
